The public is invited to a Garden Party! The Woman’s Club of Big Bear Lakes' 78th Annual Flower Show is set for Friday and Saturday, July 19 & 20 in Hofert Hall in the Performing Arts Center in Big Bear Lake.
Currently consisting of about 53 members, the Woman’s Club boasts 93 years of outreach and camaraderie. The organization is responsible for such historic feats as starting the first Big Bear Valley library and purchasing the first fire wagon in the area. The ladies also knit lap blankets for VA Loma Linda Healthcare patients, contribute two scholarships to Big Bear High School and one to Chautauqua High School each year, and aid Ronald McDonald House Charities, Pennies for Pines and the local therapeutic horsemanship organization EQUU8.
The Woman’s Club was started in 1922 by a small group of women to be a social outlet. In 1923, the organization joined the California Federation of Woman’s Clubs and began its legacy of uniting women for self-improvement and giving service to the community.
The Annual Flower Show began while the U.S. was engaged in World War II as a way to boost morale locally. The show continued in the coming years as a gift to the community and a way to support local charities through monetary donations.
This year’s Flower Show will feature the following flower and plant categories: cut flowers, wildflower arrangements, African violets, miniature arrangements, perennials, annuals, all-white arrangements, flowering and non-flowering house plants, roses, flower arrangements with shells, multi-floral mixtures of annuals, perennials and/or wildflowers, buds-and-bees-themed arrangements, children’s entries and succulents. This year will also feature the category edibles consisting of flowers or plants that can be consumed, which was just added for the 2016 event.
Eligible entries can be submitted from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, July 14, and must be picked up prior to the closing of the show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 15. Spectators may view arrangements from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
