Saturday, September 23rd, 8:00 AM - Onyx Summit to 18 on the PCT Section C - Hike.
This shuttle/through hike is replete with a variety of sights, views and flora and fauna. At the starting elevation of 8,200 feet on Onyx Summit, the autumn air will likely be quite cool and crisp. Don't miss the massive gnarly trunks of the windswept Junipers. From the summit we will then descend several hundred feet into a forest of the usual Jeffries and Ponderosas. At mile 5 we will take a break at Deep Springs Campground in a meadow of ferns, grasses and wildflowers. From there we will make our ascent and eventually come into the mountain desert. This is a strenuous, 13 mile hike with an ascent of about 700 ft and a descent of about 1400 ft. We will meet at 8:00 am at the Cushenberry pass on Rte. 18. We will car pool over to the Onyx Summit trailhead and meet some other hikers there at 8:30.
